The term Baptism comes from the Greek and symbolizes immersion, and this is the definition that continues to have until today, the signs of baptism are based on the sacrament by which a person begins on the path of their spiritual formation, through water and supplication to the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Baptism ceremony is part of one of the most significant moments for a Christian family, it is like that welcome that is given to the baby. Not only mom and dad participate in these ceremonies, but also all the members that make up the family and even acquaintances, friends and distant relatives. With baptism, the baby is received in the Church, a very short ceremony is performed, it is the celebration for the birth of the baby and its initiation is done through baptism.
For many, performing the baptism represents the presentation of the baby before God and it is for this reason that at the end of the ceremony the relatives celebrate in a private meeting, with friends and acquaintances. The church announced that the matter of Baptism was considered as a dogma of the faith, it is the way Jesus arranged it and in the same way the apostles did it.
This conceptualization is given due to the need to discuss the doctrine left by Luther, in which it was said that any type of liquid could be used, he left us a kind of argument that could prove thesis: “although we know water it is capable of washing every surface, and this makes it the indicated matter by which we can wash our bodies of sin. Without leaving behind the fact that it can be found anywhere, it is precisely this that makes it important, for the sacrament water is the matter of reason.
Representation of Baptism
Baptism is not just a personal issue, because when it is carried out it is capable of moving the entire Christian society, it represents the manifestation of the newborn’s admission to religion led by parents and godparents.
hear the word
We must listen to the word of God, it is known that each person listens and makes the interpretation according to them, but it is not only about listening but about receiving the word of God in our hearts in order to be blessed. If there is something that we should ask from the bosom, it is the strength so that it comes to life in our hearts and to make it live in daily life.
offerings of faith
For the entire Christian association, the celebration establishes a dialogue between God, the father, the baby, and faith, accompanied by the godmother and godfather if it is a child, but if it is an adult, it is only the baptized person who accompanies him. These are the offerings of the baptism:
- “Do you therefore renounce sin to live in the freedom of the children of God?” – “Yes, I resign”.
- “Do you believe in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?” – “Yes I believe”.
bible baptism of jesus
In the Bible in Matthew 3 we are told about the baptism of Jesus:
13: Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14: But John opposed him, saying: I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?
15: But Jesus answered him: Leave now, because thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. So he left him. 16: And Jesus, after he was baptized, went up afterwards out of the water; And behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him.
17: And there was a voice from heaven, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
What are the signs of baptism?
For believers to know what are the signs of baptism? It has a lot of meaning and importance because, like all beings, we like to be informed and even more so if it is about the reception of a baby:
Assignment of the cross on the forehead
The first thing that is done in the church at the time of baptism, the priest, encourages a conversation with the parents and godparents after the conversation, receives the one who is going to be baptized and makes the sign of the cross. As already mentioned, it is the way in which he is received at the gates of God’s home. This sign of the cross on the forehead is not only made to the baptized by the priest because mom, dad and godparents also make this gesture.
The amount of bible reading is done, perhaps more than two verses, let us remember that the word of the Lord is the origin of life. One of the most acclaimed verses is the Gospel of John, because in it he tells us about what existed in the beginning, which is precisely the word of the Lord.
John 1: The Word made flesh tells us:
“1: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God. 2: This was in the beginning with God. 3: All things were made by him, and without him nothing was made that was made that was made. 4: In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not prevail against it. 6: There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7: This man came for a testimony, that he might bear witness to the light, so that through him all might believe. 8: He was not the light, but to bear witness to the light. 9: That true light, which enlightens every man, came into this world.”
This is about the prayer that the Christian community performs in honor of the being to be baptized, it is the reaffirmation of the patronage in which they are present and of the organization of the universal Catholic churches. The rosary is requested by each saint, for all Christians who have not pre-existed, so that through it they intercede with God and for the catechumen of which he will be baptized it is one of the signs of baptism.
oil of catechumens
In the archaism they had various forms of oil use, but the most used was for the preparation of the combats of the fighters. It is currently used and prepared by the priest for the baptized person before receiving the holy sacrament, applying a kind of oil on the chest of the person to be baptized.
It is a sign of baptism, and has as a representation of the life that communicates with the holy spirit to wash the being of all sin. It is blessed first by the priest or deacon, all the baptismal offerings are made in which sins are renounced and finally faith and the Creed are professed.
After the blessing of the water, the sins, the mother and father are asked if they want the child to be baptized. In the same way, the godparents are asked the question, and it is just at that moment that it is dropped on the baby’s head the water together to the pronunciation of the words:
“I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
It is the representation of the mark of the Lord that is received to give the baptized person the strength they will need throughout their lives and, of course, according to the values of the gospel. In the ceremony, the child’s head is buried with the holy chrism, and the balsamic oil already blessed for this is done in a separate mass that we know from the Chrism mass that is held every year.
Signs of baptism, which is the representation of clothing, tries to symbolize that all sin has died in the life of the baptized and has been reborn in a new life, which is the life of all of us who are descendants of God and long to live without any sin and all evil. And since the color white represents purity, this works well for the sacraments.
In the celebration of the Baptist ceremony, he is given a candle that symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the job of the parents and godparents to keep this light on in the heart of the baptized. Remembering that there is a loving and kind God who does not abandon us. It is the light that will shine perpetually before any society.
