Being a poet is not an easy task, since it requires a lot of sensitivity, creativity and knowledge of words to be able to write a poem. This is a virtue that you have to know how to cultivate, because not everyone has that facility.

Writing a poem requires keeping certain aspects in mind at the time of doing so in order to achieve the task.

Thus, for example, when it comes to writing poems for evangelical Christian pastors or for any person or situation, it is important to be certain of what you want to awaken in the reader to whom the poem is addressed.

For this reason, the poet must know, as closely as possible, the feelings, qualities, desires and hopes of life to whom the poem is dedicated, in order to be able to speak to his heart.

In order to help in this task and for the person who wants to start in this art of poetry writing or for those who already write poems who wish to point out their skills, we present below some recommendations in this regard.

• Keep in mind the message that you want to send: Define the message or the idea that you want to give; that is, if you want to express a friendly note, or rather, a congratulations, a thank you or any other reason.
• Define the style of the poem to write: When the person is starting in the art of writing, it is best to use a free style, so as not to have to follow metric or rhyme rules.
• Write from your heart:  This is the essential element to praise the person for whom the poem is made and to whom love and respect are professed. You should write to him with feelings and emotions and make his soul vibrate.
• Look for a reason for inspiration: The sources of inspiration must be based on the virtues of the pastor as a spiritual guide, in his gift of service to God, in his works for his faithful.

However, it is important to keep in mind that the praise should be done with great respect, but not with adoration or idolatry, since they are only reserved for the glory of God.

• The use of literary figures:  Learn a little about and document the literary figures that can be used, which allow you to give rein to your imagination.

As we know, these figures are unconventional ways of using words to give them expressiveness, liveliness and beauty and with this we manage to move, suggest, surprise or persuade. Here are some of those figures:

Simile or comparison: relationship of similarity between two elements. Examples: “Live like a king” or “light as a feather”

Metaphor: subtle association of analogy between two ideas or images. Examples: “He Walks on Clouds” or “He is killing himself to raise the money.”

Personification: attributing qualities of a rational or animated being to another inanimate. Examples: “ Love knocked on your door when you least expected it.” or “The  kittens were happy when their owner brought them the bowl of milk.”

Synesthesia: use visual, auditory, gustatory, tactile, olfactory sensations. Examples: “With the warmth of your smile , you embraced and disarmed my fears.” or “The crystal clearness of her words ”

Alliteration: repeating the same sound or similar sounds in the same sentence to produce a certain sound effect. Examples: “Here comes he who came to drink wine has come.” or “With the lofty wing of the slight fan.”

Hyperbole: Exaggeratedly increasing or diminishing a feature to draw attention to it. Examples: “For your love my air, my heart and my hat hurt.” or “He has a heart that does not fit in his chest.”

• Choose the appropriate place:  It must be a quiet place that contributes to concentration and avoids distractions.

Qualities of a shepherd

The pastor is that person who has been given spiritual authority within a Christian church. His functions are primarily to lead and care for a congregation of devotees.

This word is generally used in the environment of traditional Protestant and Evangelical churches, even when it is rarely applied to bishops, priests and deacons of the Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican churches.

Now, what qualities must a pastor have to carry out the task that inspires the glory of God?

In principle and most importantly, a pastor is in charge of ensuring that the people of the community they serve are guided so that they worship God. Therefore, they must always keep in mind that being a pastor is just being the instrument chosen by the living God to deliver his message and teaching.

From there, it follows that it must be clear that pastors are honored, but they should not be paid or idolatry and much less adoration, which, as we know, is reserved for the Glory and Honor of God.

The pastor must always be humble in his preaching and actions and always thanking the Lord for having chosen them as spiritual guides of a certain flock.

So what does God look for and expect from a pastor?

Here are some of the basic characteristics that every good shepherd must contemplate in his work of biblical teaching when shepherding his flock:

Holiness

His conduct before his followers and his personal life must be impeccable, blameless, worthy of imitation. That should be a primary requirement to meet.

His congregation should see him as a spiritually mature person, consistent at all times between what he preaches and what he lives on a daily basis, and always ready to attend to the requests and needs of his group.

The pastor has to be the model of holiness that his flock wants and needs. It is therefore opportune to refer to Philippians 4:9, which points out in this regard: “ What you learned and received and heard and saw in me, this do; and the God of peace will be with you . ”

The pastor as a minister of God echoes what the apostle Paul always proclaimed when he said that his followers should be his imitators, just as he was of Jesus Christ. This is narrated in verse 11:1 in the first letter of Corinthians.

This must be demonstrated in his life as a father, husband, family and friends and all his devotees, without disapproving acts of his behavior that tarnish his reputation.

Trustworthy of the Word

The pastor must have knowledge of Scripture and know the meaning of what is transmitted there in the clearest and most reliable way of those biblical texts.

Always invoke the Holy Spirit at the beginning of your sermons, so that through his intercession you can use the right, consistent and assertive words and phrases to reach the soul of those who listen to you.

He must be able to humbly recognize that he is only an instrument of God, for which he has prepared thoroughly and has committed himself to being faithful to the divine message.

He is aware that his preaching has implications for people’s lives, hence he must stick to the original meaning of the biblical text and thus avoid distortions.

That is why you must understand that meaning accurately, for which you have to spend many hours in Bible study before you are ready to stand in the pulpit as a preacher .

His speech must be marked by fidelity to the biblical text and by clarity in communication and simplicity in the way he exposes it. This gives him the basis and power to exhort people to live the truth that he proclaims .

His interest is focused on ensuring that his faithful devotees always have access to the Word of God, feeding them with the truth that Jesus preached in the world.

It is the first interest that his flock is well informed of Christian teachings in such a way as to protect them from false prophets and not fall into the temptations of information plagued with lies and threats to their faith.

The pastor must selflessly watch over the souls of his faithful until he achieves their spiritual well-being. His word must be faithful both in public and in private, praying for his people, offering timely advice and hopeful consolation, encouraging them to profess obedience to God.

The pastor is always the first in prayer, in such a way that he can stimulate his flock and they can follow his example. The mission that God has entrusted to him, by choosing him as his representative and caretaker of his believers, is based on prayer and the ministry that he must have of the Word.

This is how Philippians 1:9-11 expresses it, which points out that they must abound in love, science and knowledge so that they can be sincere in the message for the glory and praise of God.

The pastor is in charge of the spiritual care of the devotees, so he must demonstrate a firm commitment to prayer so that his ministry bears the expected fruit.

To achieve this task, the pastor needs to be well documented in all aspects and this requires that his knowledge is based on good theology.

You must know how to retain the faithful word and thus transmit it, just as it was taught. He must know how to properly refute those who contradict themselves, distinguish between truth and error, humbly correct the one who is wrong, convince the opponents or unbelievers and confront the false teachings that tempt his flock.

In addition, he must know how to silence those who refuse to admit that they are in error.

One of the fundamental functions of pastors is to know how to train their successors, in order to strengthen their congregation and also be a multiplier of divine precepts. Pastors must know how to train future generations of spiritual leaders.

It is important, therefore, to be able to properly bequeath the mission that has been given to potential new pastors and train them in how to serve and build the other members.

This is how Paul put it in 2 Timothy 2:2: “What you have heard from me before many witnesses, this entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also . ”

This aspect is essential, since it implies spiritual maturity and guarantees the survival of the Church over time, apart from the fulfillment of the commandment to make disciples of all nations, as expressed by Matthew in 28:18-20.

Origin of the word shepherd

• The word in its function as a noun or common name refers to the person in charge of guarding, guiding and grazing the cattle.
• The second meaning as an adjective is normally applied to the dog that has been explicitly trained to help the shepherd (the person) in the care and management of the flock.

In the religious sphere, the first meaning of the word was adopted to refer to those ministers of a doctrine, whose job is to guide and guide the faithful in their journey along the path of the Lord.

In this sense, we find in the Holy Scriptures the use of the word “pastor” from the very beginning of the Christian faith. Let’s see:

• Studies carried out have recorded in the Old Testament the use of the Hebrew word “רעה”, which translates as shepherd, more than 170 times to refer to the care of the sheep in Genesis 29:7, as well as to indicate the care and spiritual nourishment of people, which Jeremiah describes in 3:15: “ and I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who feed you knowingly and understandingly ”.

• We also find in the New Testament the use of the Greek noun “ποιμήν” and the verb “ποιμαινω”, which are usually translated, respectively, as “shepherd” and “shepherd”, used 29 times each of these words.

In almost every use of the word “shepherd” reference is made to Jesus Christ. This is how we can read it, for example, in the Gospel of John 10:11 in which Jesus himself calls himself the “good shepherd”.

The use of the term can also be read in other books of the New Testament, but in terms of the verb “shepherd” used to indicate Christian work. Here are some verses from those books:

• Acts 20:28: This verse Paul speaks to the elders of the church in Ephesus and tells them that the Holy Spirit has made them bishops and their job is to “shepherd” the church of God.
• Ephesians 4:11: In this passage Paul wrote about the duties of each disciple saying that some would be apostles, others prophets and evangelists, but many would be pastors and teachers.
• 1 Corinthians 9:7: Here Paul rebukes the apostles about who is the one who feeds or shepherds the flock.
• John 21:16: In this passage Jesus asks Peter to feed (shepherd) his sheep.
• 1 Peter 5:1-2 – This verse refers to Peter asking the elders to shepherd (shepherd) God’s flock.
